Fine binding is where we pull all the stops out. The materials we use are the very best available.
Real leather bindings actually improve with handling, the leather taking on a fine, shiny patina, and very often become family heirlooms.
Traditional fine binding would include: raised bands – those ridges on the spine; hand-marbled end papers; and hand-sewn headbands – the coloured silks at the top and bottom of the book. The book edges can be gold (gilt) edged*, coloured or sprinkled.
Under this heading there is also Craft and Designer Binding. This is where your or our imaginations run wild, with things like inlays, onlays and unusual materials. The sky’s the limit, there are so many exciting things that can be done.
Henry Ford, the motor car magnate, was offered a book once, which he politely declined stating that he already had one! If you were given a fine binding we’re sure you would accept and love it.
If you are thinking of commissioning a fine or craft binding, come in and see us then we can discuss exactly what you want.
* This is the only process that we do not do in-house. We can do it but we prefer to send the books to a gilding specialist.
